[Netherlands] PhD Studentships in Skeletal Tissue Engineering - University of Twente

3 PhD students in skeletal tissue engineering University of Twente Faculteit Technische Natuurwetenschappen Enschede, 7500 AE (Overijssel), 38 hours per week University of Twente

Job description

The department of Tissue Regeneration of Prof. Clemens van Blitterswijk at the Institute for Biomedical Technology is dedicated to develop new strategies for the treatment of bone and cartilage defects. Typically, a combination of biodegradable materials and patient-derived stem cells is used to create a tissue-cultured bone or cartilage graft in vitro. Research topics, in collaboration with international research groups, ranges from basic research in both the biological and materials sciences to clinical trials to evaluate new technology in patients.

The lab recently developed novel biomaterials that do not only function as scaffold material but actively steer the process of tissue formation by impinging on cellular signaling pathways. The bio-active properties were discovered by accident, but triggered to engage on a new line of research to discover physicochemical biomaterial properties with tissue-inductive activities. This line of research, materiomics, combines in depth knowledge on cellular signaling pathways regulating tissue formation with high throughput screening of biomaterial properties. To boost this new line of research we are looking for three PhD students.
