To perform studies on volcano processes and develop numerical stress transfer models the Department 2 “Physics of the Earth” invites applications for a position of a PhD Student (m/f).
The project will be done in the VolcanoTectonics research group and the division of natural hazards.
Tasks:
The main research goal is to better understand how patterns of magma emplacement, degassing and seismicity correlate with the amount and type of stress changes. The Ph.D. project is part of a larger research initiative “Exupery” that is designed to develop a mobile Volcano Fast Response System (VFRS) and includes advancements of ground and space based observational techniques as well as development of a central database, volcano alert level system and visualization tools.

The group of Riccardo Rattazzi and the future group of Claudio Scrucca at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne invite applications for several Ph.D. fellowships in the area of theoretical particle physics. These fellowships are jointly sponsored by EPFL and by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The preferred starting date is fall 2007 and the duration is 4 years.
The candidates should have obtained a Master in Physics by the starting date. Preference will be given to candidates with a solid basis in theoretical physics.
Research areas include field and string theory, high energy phenomenology, physics beyond the standard model, supersymmetry, supergravity, and cosmological aspects of particle physics. All the groups working in particle physics at EPFL have strong ties with nearby CERN

Applicants are invited to apply for this 3 year fully-funded PhD studentship to be supervised by Prof. Dominic Upton and Dr Annie Young.
The successful applicant will receive a bursary of £12,300 per annum for a period of 3 years plus an expenses budget. Fees will be paid in full at the UK/EU rate for home and EU citizens. Overseas students are welcome to apply but will need to fund the balance of fees for Overseas Research Students.
Project Summary
In the last few years, the UK government has been highlighting the importance of self responsibility and self management in health and illness. The mobile telecommunications industry offers one means of supporting patients in this endeavour. It is widely recognised that the use of chemotherapy results in side effects that adversely affect patients’ quality of life. If side effects can be reported early, then with prompt intervention, they may be minimised and ultimately lives saved. Mobile phone systems allow patients to alert healthcare professionals (HCPs) automatically, in real time, only when necessary and have been successfully piloted for diabetes and asthma.
