[Germany] PhD Student in Experiments on Superconducting Qubits at Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

At Physikalisches Institut of the University Erlangen-Nürnberg we are seeking a highly motivated PhD student for experiments in the novel and exciting field of superconducting qubits for the future quantum computers. This challenging research project in macroscopic quantum physics requires measurements at ultra-low temperatures with low-noise electronics, as well as using microwaves and nanosecond pulses to manipulate “artificial atoms” made of superconducting structures with Josephson junctions.

The project aims at experimental investigation of new type of detectors for very fast and weakly perturbing readout of superconducting qubits. The detection principle is based on measuring the delay time of a ballistic fluxon (magnetic flux quantum propagating as soliton) moving in a Josephson transmission line when passing by a qubit. Due to the pinning potential induced by the localized magnetic flux of the qubit, the fluxon propagation delay depends on the state of the qubit. The expected advantage of ballistic fluxon detectors over existing readout techniques used for superconducting qubits are low dissipated power, high time resolution and small back action on the qubit. Ballistic fluxon detectors should be suitable for implementation of non-destructive measurement schemes with superconducting qubits, including quantum non-demolition readout and feedback control schemes.
The succesfull candidate should have Master of Science (Diplom) degree in physics or in electrical engineering. He (or she) should have experience in at least some of the following areas: superconductivity, low-temperature physics, quantum mechanics, nanofabrication, cryogenics, microwave measurements. He (or she) should be a good team player and have an ability to take initiative. Our group is an international team, so good English communication skills are essential. Knowledge of German in order to contribute to the teaching activities is also valuable. Applications can be submitted by e-mail, containing application letter, CV, exams with grades, contact details of at least two references, and your MSc (Dipl.) thesis. The position is available starting from February 1, 2007 or later. Payment is according to the German salary rules for the public service. The duration of the position is 3 years.
